    Service Overview

    What This Service Covers

    What It Is

Drainage installation and repair covers everything related to managing water flow on and around your property. This includes foul water drainage (connecting to the sewer system), surface water drainage (managing rainwater runoff), soakaways, land drainage, French drains, channel drains, and inspection chambers. At Digger T, we install complete drainage systems from scratch and repair or replace existing systems that have failed, collapsed, or become blocked beyond clearing.

    Who It's For

Homeowners dealing with persistent flooding, waterlogged gardens, or backed-up drains. Property developers installing drainage infrastructure for new builds. Builders who need drainage connections for extensions, conversions, and outbuildings. Commercial property managers dealing with surface water management issues.

    When You Need It

You need drainage work when you're experiencing standing water, slow-draining fixtures, persistent damp, sewage smells, or visible ground subsidence near drain runs. You also need drainage installation when building new structures, extending properties, creating hard-standing areas that change natural water flow, or when existing clay or pitch-fibre pipes have reached the end of their lifespan.

    Why Professional Help Matters

Drainage systems operate under pressure, underground, and out of sight. Incorrect installation leads to blockages, flooding, structural damage, and health hazards. Gradient calculations, pipe sizing, connection methods, and soakaway design all require technical knowledge. A professional drainage contractor ensures your system is designed correctly, installed to building regulations, and will function reliably for decades.

    Why This Matters

What Happens If You Get This Wrong

Drainage problems don't fix themselves — they get worse. What starts as a slow-draining sink or a damp patch can escalate into a serious structural and health issue if left unaddressed.

    • !Persistent flooding that damages foundations, causes subsidence, and makes gardens unusable for months at a time.
    • !Foul water backing up into your property through toilets, showers, and floor drains — creating health hazards and requiring emergency remediation.
    • !Collapsed drain pipes that go undetected until raw sewage contaminates your soil, triggering expensive environmental remediation.
    • !Rising damp and mould caused by poor drainage that degrades indoor air quality and reduces property value by tens of thousands.
    • !Building control rejections for new builds and extensions because drainage wasn't designed or installed to current regulations.
    • !Neighbour disputes and potential legal liability when poorly managed surface water floods adjacent properties.

    Our Process

    How We Deliver Results

    01

    Drainage Survey & Assessment

We inspect your existing drainage (CCTV survey if needed), assess ground conditions, review site levels, and identify the root cause of any drainage issues. We discuss your options clearly and provide a detailed, itemised quote.

    02

    System Design & Planning

We design the drainage solution — calculating pipe sizes, gradients, soakaway volumes, and connection points. For new builds and extensions, we work from architects' plans and coordinate with building control requirements.

    03

    Excavation & Installation

Our team excavates trenches to the correct depths and gradients, lays pipe runs on proper bedding material, installs inspection chambers and connections, and constructs soakaways or attenuation systems as required.

    04

    Testing & Verification

Every drainage system is water-tested to confirm correct flow, leak-free joints, and compliant gradients. We verify everything works before backfilling and can facilitate building control inspections.

    05

    Completion & Reinstatement

Trenches are backfilled and compacted. Surfaces are reinstated to their original condition where possible. We remove all waste, tidy the site, and provide documentation of the installed system.

    In-Depth Guide

    Everything You Need to Know

Types of Drainage Systems We Install

We install foul water drainage systems that connect your property's waste pipes to the public sewer or private treatment plant. This includes everything from simple WC connections for extensions to complete foul drainage networks for new builds with multiple connection points, inspection chambers, and rodding access.

Surface water drainage handles rainwater from roofs, driveways, and hard-standing areas. We install gullies, channel drains, downpipe connections, and underground pipe networks that discharge to soakaways, watercourses, or surface water sewers. For properties in flood-risk areas, we design attenuation systems that control discharge rates.

Land drainage addresses waterlogged ground using perforated pipe systems, French drains, and herringbone drainage patterns. These systems collect groundwater and redirect it to a suitable discharge point, keeping your garden, drive, and building foundations dry.

    Soakaway Design and Installation

A soakaway is an underground structure that allows surface water to percolate into the surrounding soil rather than overwhelming the drainage network. Building Regulations require that surface water is managed on-site where practical, making soakaways essential for most new builds and extensions.

We carry out percolation tests to determine the soil's absorption rate, then calculate the required soakaway volume based on the roof or hard-standing area being drained. Soakaways are constructed using modular crate systems wrapped in geotextile membrane, backfilled with clean stone, and connected to the surface water drainage network. Correct sizing and positioning are critical — an undersized soakaway will overflow, and one placed too close to foundations can cause structural problems.

    Common Drainage Problems in Essex

Essex properties face specific drainage challenges. London clay soil has very low permeability, meaning water drains slowly and can cause significant waterlogging. Properties built before the 1960s often have clay or pitch-fibre drain pipes that have deteriorated, collapsed, or become root-infested.

Many older Essex properties have combined drainage systems where foul and surface water share the same pipes. During heavy rainfall, these systems overwhelm, causing sewage to back up. Separating foul and surface water drainage resolves this issue permanently. Coastal properties near Southend and the Thames Estuary may also face additional challenges from high water tables and tidal influences.

    Drainage Repairs and Replacements

When drainage systems fail, we can carry out targeted repairs or full replacements depending on the extent of the damage. Localised pipe collapses can be repaired by excavating the affected section and replacing it with modern PVC-U pipework. Root intrusions are cleared and the affected joints sealed or replaced.

For older properties with widespread drainage deterioration, a full system replacement is often more cost-effective than repeated spot repairs. We remove the old system entirely, install new pipework on correct gradients, and add modern inspection chambers for easy future maintenance.
