In-Depth Guide ## Everything You Need to Know ### Sub-Base Preparation for Different Surfaces Natural stone and porcelain paving require a compacted Type 1 sub-base (minimum 100mm) followed by a full mortar bed. The sub-base must be level and compacted in layers. Any unevenness in the base translates directly to the finished surface — and with premium materials costing £50–£100+ per square metre, this isn't where you want to cut corners. Block paving uses a compacted Type 1 sub-base topped with sharp sand, similar to driveways. Concrete paving slabs can be laid on a sand-cement mix on compacted sub-base. Each surface type has specific sub-base requirements, and we adjust our preparation accordingly. ### Drainage Design for Outdoor Spaces Every patio must drain surface water away from the property. We design falls of at least 1:60 (approximately 17mm per metre) away from the house. For larger patios, additional fall may be needed to reach drainage channels or permeable areas.
